The Phoenix School of Music is focused on helping young musicians realize their own creative voice, and supplying them with the tools for expressing that voice, through music. Through a playing/performance intensive and professionally guided musical experience, the students become familiar with their own creative process, their musical voice, their skills as a musician, and their worth as a member of a musical group.

Our Curriculum
The Phoenix School of Music offers individual instruction with professional musicians and teachers, on a variety of musical instruments. To complement a student’s personal growth on his/her instrument, the Phoenix School of Music also provides exciting and creative performance opportunities in various ensembles.

Individual Instruction Focus

  • Personal music goals and desires of the student, including music from the student's experience/repertory (i.e. you learn to play what you like)
  • Instrumental technique
  • Solo performance opportunities

Ensembles Focus

  • How to play with a group of other musicians, and make the music "swing".
  • Basic knowledge of the musical language (written and verbal; music notation, etc). This allows students to more effectively communicate musical ideas.
  • Varying musical styles and genres
  • Effective communication skills to work as a cohesive group, and make music together.
  • Repertory consisting of original works by students, with a focus on how to realize a musical idea.
  • Teacher performances and guest artist workshops.
  • As the culmination of the program, the music school bands open at a Saturday Night Concert headlining top local groups at the Phoenix Theater.

First and Third Sundays, 5pm–7pm · FREE

The idea: to provide young local musicians and bands with a place to perform their music in the comfortable and booking-free environment of an open mic, and to offer them the advice and guidance of experienced musicians and performers. This is open to bands, solo performers, songwriters, or young players looking for a band. Amplifiers, PA, and a drum set will be provided.
