Art Programs at the Phoenix
The Phoenix Art Program is designed with a focus on the development of young people as artists. We provide programs which engage our young artists in the professional art world through mentoring relationships with artists, art shows at the Phoenix and local galleries, and community/public art projects. We offer after school classes, are home to the Phoenix Art Collective, a multidiscipline group, which works on community public installations and shows, and work to assist teens in finding internships and outside arts opportunities. Our programs are open to all teens, free of charge.
After-School Classes
The Phoenix offers after school arts classes through out the year. The offerings change each semester.
The Phoenix Art Collective
The Phoenix Art Collective (PAC), takes the shape of a committee, composed of students, staff/artists and board members. Members are responsible for finding or creating community arts projects, which are presented to the committee for selection. The projects must be broad enough to include multiple artists, engage with the community, include an artist mentor and be driven by youth. Once a project has been selected the artists are responsible for the design, coordination and execution of the project, with support from artist mentors and staff. The committee meets year round, weekly, or more often as a project requires.
Past Projects of the PAC
-
Dia de Los Muertos 2008: Phoenix artists created 10 thematic murals which were mounted on double sided rolling panels for the outside of the art center during their month long celebration.
-
Petaluma Bounty Farm Billboard: A collaboration of the Petaluma Bounty, the Phoenix Theater and Burners without Borders. Including work of artists from several disciplines.
-
Phoenix Guitar Gala: PAC Artists designed “art” guitars which were auctioned in a benefit for the Phoenix, sold next to those of George Lucas and Stan Lee.
-
American Graffiti Charity Auction: Students from the Art to Empire program as well as Phoenix artists decorated hubcaps which were then auctioned for three local charities. Our artists also painted live at Haus Fortuna the day of the Celebration.
Upcoming Projects
-
Dia de Los Muertos 2009: This year we will again be participating in the Day of the Dead Celebration in October of 2009!
