The Petaluma Phoenix Center, also known as the Phoenix Theater, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in support of local youth.

The mission of the Petaluma Phoenix Theater is to foster the emotional, physical and social development of the young people we serve by enabling them to create and engage in programs for music, the arts, and health and wellness, while preserving and improving the historic Phoenix Theater as a resource for youth and the community at large.








FALL 2009 FREE MUSIC CLASSES

PODCASTING, NEW MEDIA, MUSIC JOURNALISM (Mondays 4-5PM)
September 7 - December 12, 2009 @ the Phoenix Theater In the Music Studio / 2-10 students
Participants will be part of the Phoenix Podcasting Interviewing team. At least once per month we will be contacting and interviewing one of the bands that will be playing the Phoenix Theater. Students will learn the basics of Podcasting, interviewing, editing and basic web programming necessary for podcasting. Additionally, this semester we will be exploring possibilities for Video podcasts as well as possibiliites for print interviews, photography and other Music Journalism media.


HARMONICA FOR BEGINNERS (Sundays 4-5PM)
6 weeks, start date TBA @ the Phoenix Theater In the Music Studio / 4-8 students
Don't be satisfied with merely sucking at harmonica. Designed to give you the foundation for solid solo and jam playing, this class covers harp selection and care, playing single notes and chords, rhythm and breathing, tone, tone, tone, basic jamming with groups and self, acoustic effects, intro to mics, and web resources. Brave students are encouraged to join the Sunday Rock Jam immediately following the classes. Instructor: Bruce Hagen.


ONE ON ONE MUSIC INSTRUCTION (Hours by appointment)
September 7 - December 12, 2009 @ the Phoenix Theater In the Music Studios
Space and Scheduling is Limited

These are 30 minute per week meetings with one of our music faculty. Lessons can focus on Bass, Guitar, Drums, beginning keyboard lessons, song writing development, music theory, and most any other aspect of musical study, at the discretion of the student.

Appointments and focus of study are made on a student by student basis.

ONGOING MUSIC SCHOOL EVENTS (including weekly drop-in sessions)

Sundays 5-7PM: Rock, Funk, and Blues Jam

Hosted by Gio Benedetti of Toast Machine, this jam consists of 1,2,3 or even 4 chord jams, a 12 bar blues tune or two, and the occasional rock standard. The last Sunday of every month is hosted by the Sonoma County Blues Society, and will focus a bit more on the standard Blues repertoire. It is fun, the gear is provided (or bring your own), and it is loud.

Wednesdays 6:30-8:30pm: Jazz Jam
All ages, be able to read a chord chart!
Hosted by Gio Benedetti, this jam focuses on the standard Jazz repertoire and improvisational style. Charts and books in all clefs are provided. All instruments are welcome, and if you know a tune, call it – or better yet, bring us a chart! We’ll play it.

We host 1-on-1 and group lessons throughout the week for youths aged 10-18.
