The Phoenix Tutoring Center is organized to help junior high and high school students improve their academic skills (especially in writing and math), meet deadlines, and successfully complete projects. It also offers writing and poetry events and workshops, and provides a quiet place with some supplies for students to work on art. Volunteer high school and SRJC student tutors are available on site to help with short or long term school projects.

The Center was started by Dave and Dennis Murphy in 2002 to help provide a safety net for at risk youths in Petaluma. Since then, as well as providing one on one tutoring to students though out the school year, the tutoring center has evolved into an informal art and writing center and each year publishes "Art and Poetry of the Phoenix". The Tutoring program has also sponsored several poetry slams, and poetry reading nights for teens as well as adults. Casa Grande High School Tech club keeps the center working with functioning computers and printers. Petaluma High and Casa Grande High school students who qualify can fulfill their community service hours by volunteering as tutors in the program.

Current program and offerings:

The Tutoring Center is open Monday through Thursday from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM. It’s free of charge and available on a drop in basis. Volunteer high school and SRJC student tutors are available on site to help with short or long term school projects or tutoring. The tutoring center is available for students to work on their own on art projects or use a computer for writing during open hours.

A writers' mentoring project is just beginning with published poets and writers in Sonoma County paired to mentor teen writers as part of an ongoing writer’s workshop.
